We've audited hundreds of UK electricians websites. The same seven mistakes show up almost every time. Fixing them is the difference between a site that sits idle and a site that puts booked work on your calendar every week.
This guide is written for working electricians. If you'd rather we just fix it for you, jump straight to our electricians marketing service or pick your city: London, Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, Bristol or 100+ more.
Mistake #1: Targeting 'electrician' instead of 'electrician + city + service'
Generic 'electrician' has high volume but you're fighting NICEIC's directory, Checkatrade and Rated People. You'll never rank. Local-intent + service-specific keywords like emergency electrician {city}, EV charger installer {city}, EICR {city} are where the actual bookings live.
The fix: Build a dedicated landing page for each service area + service combination. Optimise URL, H1, meta, image alt and body copy around {service} {area}. See how we structure them on Electricians London or Manchester.
Mistake #2: Hiding NICEIC or NAPIT registration in the footer
Electricians searching online are spooked by horror stories of cowboy installers. NICEIC/NAPIT roundel + certificate number above the fold is the single fastest trust signal. Most electricians bury it in 'About'.
The fix: Display the NICEIC contractor mark + your six-digit number in the header. Link to your public NICEIC profile so customers can verify. Trust closes the sale.
Mistake #3: No dedicated EV charger landing page
EV charger installation queries grew 280% since 2022. They're £800-£1,500 jobs and customers are OZEV-grant aware. Most electricians have it as a bullet on the services list.
The fix: Build a dedicated EV charger page. Cover OZEV grant eligibility, brand options (Pod Point, Wallbox, EO, Andersen, Zappi), installation timeline, and price. We've done this on every electricians city page.
Mistake #4: Missing EICR pages for landlords
Landlords are legally required (Electrical Safety Standards in the Private Rented Sector Regulations 2020) to commission an EICR every 5 years. They Google specifically for 'EICR {city}'. Most electricians don't have a page matching the intent.
The fix: Build an EICR landlord page per city. Reference the legal requirement, the typical price range, and how fast you can deliver. Easy ranking, recurring work.
Mistake #5: Slow mobile site — Core Web Vitals fail
Over 80% of electrician searches are mobile. Most electrician sites we audit fail Lighthouse — big hero images, eight JavaScript libraries, render-blocking CSS. Slow site = bounce = Google demotes you.
The fix: Run Google PageSpeed Insights mobile. Aim under 2 seconds LCP. WebP every image. Defer non-critical JS. Lazy-load below-the-fold. We rebuild from scratch when the existing site can't hit it — on DigiSurf Web Design.
Mistake #6: No follow-up engine for missed calls
MIT lead-response study: businesses replying in 60 seconds book 391% more jobs. Most electricians are on a job, drill running. Phone goes to voicemail. Customer Googles next electrician.
The fix: Install missed-call text-back (DigiSurf Growth Engine). Every missed call → instant SMS. Forms → 60-second reply. WhatsApp → auto-response. Cold leads nurtured.
Mistake #7: No schema markup — Google can't tell what you do
Schema is the structured data telling Google about your business + services + reviews + FAQs. Without it, Google guesses. With it, you get rich results — stars, FAQs, opening hours, services menu.
The fix: Add LocalBusiness, Electrician, Service, FAQPage, AggregateRating and BreadcrumbList JSON-LD. Test with Google Rich Results Test. We build all of this in by default.
The shortcut: get all seven done for you
If reading this list has made you want to close the laptop — that's the right reaction. SEO for a electrician business is a full-time job. You shouldn't be doing it.
That's exactly what we do at DigiSurf for electricians — fix all seven, then run the engine that keeps the phone ringing. 30 days free while you trial it.
