We've audited hundreds of UK accountants websites. The same seven mistakes show up almost every time. Fixing them is the difference between a site that sits idle and a site that puts booked work on your calendar every week.
This guide is written for working accountants. If you'd rather we just fix it for you, jump straight to our accountants marketing service or pick your city: London, Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, Bristol or 100+ more.
Mistake #1: One 'services' page for everything
Limited-company accounts, sole-trader self-assessment, partnership tax, VAT, payroll, R&D claims, EIS/SEIS — each is a different customer with different pain. Modern firms publish landing pages per service per city.
The fix: Build a page per service per city. Limited company accountant {city}, contractor accountant {city}, self-assessment {city}. See Accountants London for the structure.
Mistake #2: Hiding ICAEW or ACCA chartered status
Chartered (ICAEW/ACCA/ICAS/CIMA) status is the gold-standard trust mark. AAT-only firms should be honest but lead with HMRC agent status.
The fix: Lead with chartered body + practice number in the hero. Link to your public ICAEW/ACCA profile so prospects can verify. Trust closes.
Mistake #3: No pricing on the site
Modern accountants charge £85-£250/month inclusive. Hiding price loses leads to firms that publish. The customer who can afford you is filtered out, the price-sensitive one wastes your time.
The fix: Publish your monthly tiers + inclusions. Use Service + Offer schema with priceRange. You'll get fewer enquiries but higher-quality ones.
Mistake #4: Missing Xero/QuickBooks/Sage badges
Most {primary_kw} customers want a cloud-accountant. Xero Gold/Platinum Partner + QuickBooks ProAdvisor badges signal modern practice. Display them top-right.
The fix: Show partner badges + tier (Gold, Platinum, etc.). Link to your public partner profile. Most firms hide this.
Mistake #5: No deadline-driven content
Self-assessment deadline (31 Jan), VAT deadlines, P11D deadlines, corporation-tax deadlines — pages titled '{city} self-assessment deadline 2026' rank fast and convert.
The fix: Publish deadline content quarterly. The week before each deadline = peak high-intent traffic. Easy ranking + bookings.
Mistake #6: No 'switching accountants' guide
Customers worry about leaving their current accountant — letter to issue, handover of records, mid-year switch. A clear page wins more enquiries than any 'we make switching easy' claim.
The fix: Build a 'how to switch accountants' page. Walk through the steps. Covers the customer's biggest objection.
Mistake #7: Missing FinancialService + FAQ schema
Schema.org's FinancialService markup with priceRange + AggregateRating + FAQPage triggers Google's financial rich results. Almost no UK {primary_kw} site uses it.
The fix: Add FinancialService, Service, FAQPage, Offer and BreadcrumbList JSON-LD. We build all of this in. See live example at industries/accountants.
The shortcut: get all seven done for you
If reading this list has made you want to close the laptop — that's the right reaction. SEO for a accountant business is a full-time job. You shouldn't be doing it.
That's exactly what we do at DigiSurf for accountants — fix all seven, then run the engine that keeps the phone ringing. 30 days free while you trial it.
